LUCAS LOGIC OF WIRE CODES

After W.W.II Lucas Industries was the main stream for all electrical components in British Automobiles.   As everyone gives Lucas a real hard time, they did come up with some great ideas.  One idea was the standardization of electrical wire codes.  This basically means a BROWN wire in a MG has the same results as a BROWN wire in a Triumph, Healey or Jaguar ... or what ever British car you drive.  This in turn makes it quite easy to work on the wiring of your LBC.

Now, most Lucas circuits are based on three types of wire systems. (1) a supply wire, (2) a switch wire, & (3) a return wire (or ground).  The return wire may just be a chassis ground trough a metal object and you may not have a wire at all.  All return wires are BLACK .  The supply wire is always solid in color and the switch wire has a tracer (or striped line).  The base color tells you what feed source you're using, i.e. switched, always hot, fused, or not fused.

Please keep this chart handy when working on your LBC.  It will help better understand the simplicity of British wiring.

B ..... BLACK ..................................................... GROUND!!!
